Super Green strategy
Sharp is pursuing environmental conservation in all aspects of its business activities, and has been implementing its ‘Super Green’ strategy since 2004. This strategy revolves around five green themes:
Super Green technologies
Develop unique technologies that contribute to environmental conservation
Super Green products and devices Create products and devices with high environmental performance
Super Green factories
Develop environmentally conscious factories that can be trusted by local communities
Super Green recycling
Recycle used products to promote the reuse of resources
Super Green management
Enhance environmental sustainability management

The Super Green initiatives look at every aspect of the manufacturing processes, from extracting natural resources to the end product and its disposal, literally from “cradle to grave”.
Since the 1970’s Sharp Electronics, one of the world’s leading manufacturers, has taken its environmental and social responsibilities very seriously. This has culminated in the implementation of a range of ‘Green’ guidelines, geared towards protecting the environment and minimising the impact on global warming.

Green objectives
Our environmental policy sets a range of both mid and long term objectives:

  • Become an environmentally advanced company
  • Neutralise CO2 emissions from our businesses and products by 2010
  • Become a leader in energy efficient products
  • Reduce the impact on the environment by 6% year-on-year
  • Design products that are kind to the environment, use less energy, less natural resources and are easily recyclable
  • Reduce landfill and chemical waste
  • Comply with and, where possible, surpass all national legal requirements

Recycling
Recycling is another important environmental aspect of our Super Green strategy.
Sharp is the majority shareholder in a recycling plant based in Kansai, which recycles appliances under the local legislation, including IT equipment, MFPs and waste toner cartridges.
When MFPs reach the end of their lives they are collected and taken to the Kansai plant. Here they are examined – those with minor issues undergo a remanufacturing processes whilst the others are recycled.
In 2006, 3300 copiers were recovered – that’s 25% more than 2005. In terms of waste toner cartridges, 695,000 were collected, an increase of 38% against 2005. Of these 2% were remanufactured.

Sharp MFPs and the environment
Today, Sharp’s MFPs are networkable, allowing remote access from pratically any location, which drastically reduces the need for multiple printers.
A duplex mode facilitates either copying or printing to be made on both sides of a sheet, allowing a possible 50% saving in power consumption. Further, a scan facility allows any document to be emailed or archived electronically, thus reducing the reliance on paper.
A preheat mode removes the need to keep the fuser at operating tempreture when not in use, and a sleep mode drops power consumption to as little as one Watt – both contribute to significant savings in energy and costs.
Sharp’s current MX range now uses 30% less toner without affecting the quality of the print. This is due to a unique smaller particle toner technology, which has contributed to a 79% reduction in the size of toner cartridges. Organic photo conductor drums last twice as long as previous models, enabling 100,000 copies/prints to be made before any servicing is needed, reducing packaging and consumables.
Sharp MFPs are compliant with Energy Star and eco-label Nordic Swan, demonstrating the high environmental product performance.

What Sharp UK are doing to reinforce our environmental position

  • Recycling internal waste – resulting in zero landfill
  • Contracting to supply green electricity to our offices, supplemented by Sharp solar roof panels, saving 280kg of CO2 annually
  • Registering to ISO14001 with strict targets to reduce energy and CO2 emissions
  • Setting CO2 emission limits for all fleet vehicles and eliminating any polluting vehicles
  • Utilising video conferencing where applicable to avoid unnecessary journeys and reduce CO2
  • Adopting Sustainable Energy in Action as our preferred charity partner
What Sharp have achieved so far
  • Reduction of greenhouse gas emissions by 33% per production unit compared to 1990
  • Improved energy efficiency of all Sharp products, including MFPs
  • Reduced the size of toner cartridges by 79%
  • Doubled the life of our organic drums to 100,000 prints/copies
  • Improved our Nikkei environmental ranking from 42nd to 5th
    and the environment
